2019 Urban Design Foundations Studio Final Project
Copenhagen, a vibrant city at the forefront of green, urban design, set an incredible precedent for this project located in the Northern borough of Nørrebro at the intersection of a popular grocery store and a highly trafficked train station. What was unique about this area and what presented another essential facet to this prompt was the large number of Syrian refugees who had come to the area seeking a fresh start. It quickly became apparent, though, that the environment of the area was extremely strained, and given its position as a massive hub of transport, the site was in need of a new, more efficient flow and gathering spaces that were welcoming to all. The elements began to come to life including an oversized bike lane and parking, prioritized crossing lanes for pedestrians, play areas for children, water features, temporary market stalls that allow for rush hour traffic to pass without interference, and a coffee stand adjacent to the bus station. These elements were interwoven with extensive natural landscaping and permeable materials to bring the acclaimed green Danish infrastructure to this neglected area.
