The Chapel

2018 Introductory Studio Final Project

The Chapel project begun with the chosen site - adjacent to the Otter Creek River in Middlebury, Vermont- and its impressively steep, yet stunningly picturesque topography. The challenge of this site was incorporating this beautiful location with the proposed non-denominational spiritual center. After extensive site analyses and research into various types of woodland chapels, this space began to take its form. The final design features a central devotional room that stretches out beyond the edge of the steep hill, offering continuous views and a direct connection to the wandering garden below. Directly beneath the main room, there are three intimate spaces of self-reflection that offer additional views of the garden through louvered windows, maintaining privacy but not jeopardizing the experience for those within the spaces. The main entrance of the building follows a winding, contemplative path through the gardens creating a journey that permeates throughout the entire design.
